Bootstrapping a business

Growing a company on its own revenue, with no investors and no loans. What it means, what it takes, and how we took Finest Future to €9.3 million a year that way.

What does bootstrapping a business mean?

Bootstrapping means the company lives on its own sales revenue. You are not going after investors, not asking banks for money, not taking credit or small loans. You rely on what you have: your expertise, your network and your ability to sell. It is also a mindset that is useful even for funded companies: grow without spending money, or be very strict about every euro you do spend.

What does it take?

  • A product with real value that customers will pay for now, not after years of development.
  • Low burn and a good price. Low monthly costs and a high price point give you margins, and margins are what you grow with.
  • Every euro back into the business, into the product and into better people.
  • Creativity instead of budget. Partners, events and word of mouth instead of ads.

Examples of bootstrapped companies

Finest Future went from zero to €9.3 million in yearly revenue in four years with no investors and no loans, selling through partners in 15+ countries. The well-known examples are larger: Mailchimp grew for two decades without venture capital before Intuit bought it in 2021, and Zoho became a global software company without venture funding. What they share with us is the order of things: customers first, money second.
